图1是理论上推测的核媒质密度—温度相图。传统的低能核物理学研究相图中ρ/ρ_0=1和T=0附近小区域冷核媒质的物理特性。高能重离子碰撞提供了研究在极端密度和极端温度下核媒质性质的可能。图1中的虚线指明了碰撞中核媒质所遵循的一条可能途径。研究碰撞中所发射的粒子,能够获得核媒质态方程和动力学的情报。这些知识不仅对核物理学和基本粒子物理学的发展是非常重要的,对中子星、超新星、以及宇宙形成的研究也将起着不可估价的作用。
