引言当Chadwick 和Goldhaber 首次精确测定了中子的质量的时候就预言,中子应该具有β衰变的特性,能自发地衰变成质子、电子和中微子(Chadwick 和Goldhaber 1935)。这一衰变过程最早由Snell 和Miller 探测到。他们从强中子束中观察到了受电场吸引的正离子。后来他们证实,正离子的产生率恰好对应着半衰期为10—30分钟的中子β衰变(Snell和Miller 1948,Snell 等人1950)。
