中子活化分析虽在1936年就由Hevesy 和Levi 提出。1938年Seaborg 进行了第一个带电粒子活化分析。但在40年代活化分析法还很少被利用,1942年反应堆的建成提供了强有力的辐射源,至50—60年代由于高纯材料(如半导体材料、堆材料)要求高灵敏的测试方法,因而此时吸引了许多科学家从事这方面的研究。
