早在四十年代建造初期的加速器时,就在四周建筑了相当厚的屏蔽墙,但是屏蔽墙外仍发现
有出乎意料的辐射场,其强度之大远远超过预计水平。到1950年才认识到这个辐射场是由于加速器没有顶
部屏蔽或者太薄,中子和γ辐射到天空后,由空气散射反照下来产生的。这种现象也因此得名——天空反照
,其影响范围可达距放射源千米以外。
